A Look Into the Past

Hello there! Today I want to share with you how is it that I decided to become an actor and why.

At one point or another during our childhood we were all asked by our families, what we wanted to be when we grew up. For some of my friends their answer was to become the next Mexican President or to become an astronaut who is also a magician. Some people grow out from that idea and some follow those dreams without question until they become what they’ve always wanted to be.

For me it has been a strange journey. Growing up with two older brothers gave me a unique perspective in life and it also exposed me to their passions and how they followed them. A good example is my middle brother who ever since he was small he wanted to be a pilot. He spent hours upon hours in flight simulators travelling from one country to another in real time. And now he is a co-pilot at one of Mexico’s best airlines and a great inspiration to me as he constantly reminds me to keep pursuing my dream.

The first thing I ever wanted to be was to become a paleontologist, then a veterinarian and finally a naturalist for Discovery Channel or National Geographic. I made a plan to travel to Australia after I finished high school and explore the wilderness and the biodiversity that Australia has to offer. When my grandfather caught wind of my crazy idea he immediately suggested a career in the BBC, following on the footsteps of the Great Sir David Attenborough. It was all planned and ready to go and then something completely unexpected happened.

I always enjoyed watching the behind the scenes of films and analyzing the various themes and techniques that filmmakers introduce into their projects but never, at any point did I consider a career as an actor, let alone as an artist. Until one very strange day arrived where I was asked by one of my teachers in high school to film a short film based on a short story. When I heard these words come out of her mouth I had this feeling of “WHAT?”. And so I decided to give it a try having no experience whatsoever. I was cast by my classmates as the lead of the film due to the likeness in personality. The footage looks horrible and my performance is Razzie award worthy, but after the first take I felt amazing and continued to experiment and to understand what the hell I was trying to do. It wasn’t until I saw the finished reel that I realized I wanted to scratch the itch and explore this further, so the next semester I got cast in a few school plays and from then on the idea of going to Australia and becoming the next David Attenborough got further and further away.

It wasn’t until I arrived to Vancouver and went through acting school that I realized that acting is not the art of pretending, rather it’s the art of being and reacting to imaginary circumstances. I was very luck t have found that school and being taught by some amazing artist that I owe a great debt to.

After graduating I was a small fish in a huge ocean crowed with other fish of all sizes and experiences. Every time I have the chance to work in a short film, play or TV show, an overwhelming sense of gratitude and admiration goes to all the people who from the very start have been there to push me and support my decision to pursue this career and the fact that I am now in London, in one of the best places for an actor to be, tells me that I’m on the right path and that this is the world I want to be working in.

That’s how I found my passion and I hope you liked this little window into my past and that I hopefully sort of inspired you to keep on doing that fulfills you.

Thank you for stopping by and don’t forget to keep an eye out for future stories and updates. Go and be the best version of yourself.
